This is typically due to the broad color ranges within each LED color category. Here’s why this happens and what you can do about it:
Broad Color Ranges
When manufactured, LEDs are broadly grouped or “binned” into color categories such as red, red-orange, green, cyan, etc. These groupings can encompass broad spectrums of wavelengths. E.g.,
- Cyan LEDs can range from 490nm (bluer) to 520nm (greener).
- Red LEDs can range from 645nm (deeper red) to 620nm (more orange-red).
Small Quantity Purchases
When you purchase LED modules in small quantities, they are often built using LEDs from strips that may have been cut from different reels, often from different bins. This mixing can lead to color variations within your order. We are unable to guarantee specific bins for small-quantity purchases.
Solution – binned LEDs
If you need consistant color matching, you need to order enough LED modules so that they are built from full reels of LEDs that are from the same Bin. binned LEDs are sorted into tighter color ranges, ensuring consistent color output.
Purchasing Options
- Reels (1,000 or 2,000 LEDs): All LEDs come from the same Bin, providing consistent color. The size of the reel will depend on the LED type.
- Cut Tape (any quantity): This may include LEDs from different bins, leading to potential color variation.

Understanding these factors allows you to better plan your LED purchases to match your color expectations.
