All high-power LEDs produce heat as a by-product of their operation and must be adequately cooled to ensure long life and reliability. Failure to maintain the junction temperature of the LED well below its maximum rating will result in:
- Significantly shortened lifespan
- Reduced light output
- Change in color output (especially with white LEDs)
- Potential complete LED failure
